Latino Voter Growth and Participation Trends

As the November 2024 elections draw near, Latino voters are anticipated to make a significant impact. According to the Pew Research Center, 36.2 million Latinos are eligible to vote this year, up from 32.3 million in 2020. This marks the second-fastest growth rate among all major racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. electorate. Latinos are expected to account for 14.7% of eligible voters this November, a record high. However, it’s crucial to recognize that Latinos are less likely to be eligible to vote compared to the general population. Only 53% of Latinos are eligible to vote, compared to 72% of all Americans. This discrepancy can be attributed to the younger age profile of the Latino population, with 29% under 18 compared to 22% of the general U.S. population.

As the Latino electorate continues to expand, their increasing numbers and influence are set to impact future political outcomes significantly. Engaging with this dynamic and evolving voter base will be crucial in the lead-up to the elections.

Voting Barriers & DSPolitical’s Spanish Language Preference Model

When it comes to voting, the Hispanic-Latino community encounters several significant barriers. The Brennan Center for Justice highlights that these obstacles include strict voter ID laws, widespread misinformation, and major language barriers.

Stricter voter ID laws often disproportionately affect Latinos, who may either lack the required identification or face difficulties in obtaining it. Misinformation further complicates matters, as it can mislead Latino voters, and language barriers exacerbate the problem, making it harder to access accurate information. Among these challenges, language barriers create complex obstacles. They impact the understanding of voting procedures and the ability to navigate the electoral process effectively.

To address this issue, DSPolitical’s Spanish Language Preference Model, utilizing INTRVL’s advanced survey technology, identifies individuals who prefer to consume digital media in Spanish, a specific Spanish dialect, or a mix of Spanish and English.

During the 2024 June primary, we conducted an RCT  in a large metro area to understand the mobilization effect among Spanish-preference immigrant voters, measuring turnout effect among voters from the Spanish Language Preference Model vs. Spanish browser setting.

Results showed a substantial turnout lift among likely voters, delivering a +1.05% turnout overall, a +1.82% turnout among 18-29 year olds, and a +1.44% turnout among men.

Early results using this  innovative model earned DSPolitical an AdExchanger Awards nod for Best Use of Data

By addressing language barriers and preferences through advanced digital survey technology, DSPolitical’s Spanish Language Preference Model helps bridge the gap and ensure that Latino voters have the information and support they need to participate fully in elections.
