June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the contributions and ongoing resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. From leading movements to driving transformative change, this powerful group has long been at the forefront of social progress and advocacy. At DSPolitical, we’re proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community—not just during Pride Month, but year-round. Take a look at some of our 2024 wins supporting LGBTQ+ candidates and causes here.
Understanding the LGBTQ+ Voting Bloc
The LGBTQ+ community has played a pivotal role in political movements, consistently showing up to defend civil rights and advocate for justice. That legacy of engagement remained strong in the 2024 presidential election, where LGBTQ+ voters made their voices heard. According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), self-identified LGBTQ+ voters made up 8% of the electorate—a substantial and influential voting bloc. More notably, 84% of LGBTQ+ voters supported President Harris, highlighting the community’s overwhelming alignment with Democratic candidates and policies.
This level of support not only highlights the political power of the community, but also reinforces how critical it is for campaigns to prioritize inclusive messaging, policy advocacy, and authentic engagement.
Key Issues Driving The LGBTQ+ Vote
LGBTQ+ voter motivations stem from lived experiences, urgent policy priorities, and the ongoing fight for equality. Among the top issues driving this community to the polls is the protection of LGBTQ+ rights—from combating anti-trans legislation to defending marriage equality. Inclusive healthcare is also a critical priority, especially for transgender and nonbinary individuals who face systemic barriers to accessing affirming care. Voters are actively seeking leaders who will protect and expand access to gender-affirming treatments and healthcare equity.
In addition, the rollback of abortion rights has mobilized LGBTQ+ voters who see bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom as directly linked to the struggle for personal agency and legal recognition. Solidarity with broader movements for justice continues to inspire and shape the political engagement of this powerful and values-driven electorate. Effectively Engaging LGBTQ+ Voters
To mobilize LGBTQ+ voters, campaigns must go beyond surface-level messaging and embrace digital strategies that are precise, authentic, and inclusive. With the right tools and tactics, political advertisers can build meaningful, lasting connections with this community.
But connecting with LGBTQ+ voters isn’t just about what you say—it’s also about where you say it. At DSPolitical, we’ve long emphasized the importance of meeting voters where they are, and recent findings from Comcast Advertising validate what we explored in our webinar, Winning the Streaming Majority. According to their report, nearly 85% of LGBTQ+ voters have used a video streaming service in the past 30 days, highlighting just how critical platforms like CTV are for political outreach. This reinforces what our team has been saying: CTV offers an unmatched opportunity to deliver inclusive, values-driven messaging in an environment where viewers are highly engaged and receptive.
Comcast Advertising’s research also found that maximizing LGBTQ+ outreach requires leveraging ad-supported video on demand (AVOD) and free ad-supported streaming services—a trend we addressed directly in our webinar. We revealed that 56% of voters now use free, ad-supported streaming platforms, highlighting the urgent need for campaigns to adapt their media strategies to capture this growing audience. As streaming becomes the default for more voters, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community, campaigns that invest in digital-first, voter-informed tactics will be the ones that win.
Building a More Inclusive Future
LGBTQ+ voters are a powerful and growing presence in our democracy—one that campaigns can’t afford to ignore. Meaningful engagement with this community requires more than inclusive language; it demands digital strategies that are thoughtful, authentic, and grounded in real representation. Campaigns that prioritize this approach won’t just reach LGBTQ+ voters—they’ll earn trust and drive lasting impact.
