In honor of Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s impact on American politics and culture while reflecting on the progress we’ve made, the challenges that remain, and the growing influence this powerful community continues to have in shaping the future of our democracy.
At DSPolitical, our commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ candidates isn’t seasonal; it’s a year-round mission. As the 2026 election cycle continues, this electorate remains a powerful force driving civic engagement, advocacy, and electoral outcomes nationwide.
For organizations and campaigns, meaningful engagement requires understanding three critical dynamics: the continued growth of LGBTQ+ representation, the key issues motivating voters, and where to reach voters to build authentic connections.
Representation as a Catalyst for Action
Across the country, openly queer elected officials are shaping policy, leading legislative priorities, and expanding representation.
According to the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, the number of LGBTQ+ elected officials in the U.S. has reached over 1,330 leaders nationwide. That growth reflects increasing representation across communities, including Black, Latino, Indigenous, AAPI, transgender, and nonbinary leaders serving in local, state, and federal offices.
At the same time, Americans who identify as LGBTQ+ represent a growing and increasingly influential share of the electorate, accounting for roughly 10% of voters according to recent data. In many competitive races, LGBTQ+ voters and equality-focused voters represent a bloc larger than the margin of victory, highlighting not only the importance of sustained outreach but also the need to understand and address the issues shaping their political engagement and everyday lives.
The Urgent Issues Defining the 2026 Midterms
As we move towards midterms, several key issues continue to drive voter priorities:
- Transgender and Civil Rights: In the face of attacks by the current administration and an ongoing wave of state-level restrictions, protecting the rights of transgender individuals, especially youth, remains an urgent priority. Voters are looking for leaders who will serve as an unwavering defensive wall against discriminatory policies.
- The Intersection of Bodily Autonomy: The connection between reproductive freedoms and LGBTQ+ rights continues to shape political engagement. Concerns over healthcare access remain widespread, with 87% of LGBTQ+ adults reporting concerns about healthcare limitations and rollbacks of gender-affirming treatments.
- Economic Equity and Community Safety: Beyond social policy, individuals face everyday economic and safety concerns that continue to shape political priorities. Recent polling found that 89% of voters consider both LGBTQ+ protections and issues related to economic stability, inflation, and cost of living to be major priorities. As housing insecurity, workplace barriers, and targeted hate speech continue to rise, economic safeguards and community safety remain front-and-center concerns.
The sheer scale of these legislative challenges emphasizes why these issues are so urgent. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is currently tracking 530 anti-LGBTQ+ bills across U.S. state legislatures. From restrictions on healthcare and free expression to curriculum censorship and student rights, this unprecedented legislative push highlights the critical stakes facing the community and the immediate need for protective advocacy.
Meeting Voters in the Digital Spaces They Trust
As we ramp up to midterms, it’s critical to reach voters where they are and engage them authentically. According to LG Ad Solutions’ The Inclusive Screen 2025: LGBTQ+ Americans report, 57% of LGBTQ+ CTV viewers prefer streaming over traditional TV, citing greater accessibility and broader content variety. The same research found that 73% of viewers believe streaming ads are more relevant than ads on traditional television, while 81% prefer advertising tailored to their interests. CTV, Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST), and programmatic video are essential channels for campaigns looking to reach voters at scale with more personalized, values-driven messaging.
At DSPolitical, we’ve seen how important premium streaming environments have become for effective political outreach. Through our expanded partnership with FreeWheel, campaigns can activate first-party voter data more efficiently across CTV.
As streaming continues to define media consumption ahead of midterms, campaigns investing in precise, privacy-first digital strategies will be better positioned to connect with LGBTQ+ voters through messaging delivered in the trusted environments where audiences are most engaged.
Building a More Inclusive Political Future
Pride Month is both a celebration of progress and a reminder that representation, protection, and civic participation require continued action. LGBTQ+ voters continue to shape elections, policy conversations, and advocacy efforts.
At a time when issues like healthcare access, civil rights, economic stability, and community safety remain top concerns, it is increasingly important for campaigns to listen and understand the challenges their constituents face, and engage in meaningful and authentic ways.
